When you think about getting a massage, benefits like relaxation and muscle relief may come to mind. But what about a massage that may support a stronger immune system and more muscle tone? Well, those are some of the potential benefits of a lymphatic drainage massage.

This type of massage has been popularized recently as a way to reduce bloat and flush out toxins, but it's actually been used as a medicinal practice for some time. And unlike some overhyped beauty and wellness treatments, there's actually a good amount of science behind lymphatic massages. To get the scoop, mbg tapped a few experts to learn about the technique, and if it's actually legitimate.

Heather Jeffcoat, DPT at Femina Physical Therapy, says manual lymphatic drainage consists of specialized strokes and pressure that are performed in a certain sequence to increase movement. "These specialized hand movements follow the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and should not be confused with a basic massage," she says.

My husband and I were having problems with painful intercourse. My therapist recommended that I go and get a pelvic floor evaluation from a physical therapist. Femina PT (née Fusion Wellness & Physical Therapy) has been such an answer to prayer, i'm so glad I found them! I've been struggling with vaginismus my whole life, but didn't have a name for it until about 6 or 7 months ago. No one could tell me why I was having pain during sex--sharp pain, not just uncomfortable, pain. I was referred to Heather Jeffcoat after researching several different options. I had seen a specialist who told me physical therapy would not help and my only option was surgery. I really didn't want to go that route, so when we got a referral, I decided to try it--it can't hurt, I thought. I am so glad I did. She diagnosed the problem right away, which was a relief in itself.

To know why I was having pain eased my mind immensely. And to hear that she could fix it without surgery was another relief. She said she could fix the problem in 6 weeks.
