Self Care at Home
If you are not ready for an in-office visit, you can still connect with us!
We have always emphasized a home program for our patients, and with great success. Femina PT founder Heather Jeffcoat even wrote a book that emphasizes self care.
While it is true that hands-on therapy has been proven to benefit those with chronic pain, pelvic pain, incontinence, and more, it is also true that every successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. Our trained therapists will listen to your story, observe your movements, and make the appropriate recommendations for your particular situation.
In short, a one-on-one telehealth or coaching session is a simple, effective, and private option. Click here for more info.
Instruction in The IRAS Method is currently only available for individual instruction to patients. Qualified health care practitioners can be instructed in a group or individual setting, in your office or ours.
The IRAS Method is a unique combination of physical therapy, massage, lymphatic drainage and neuromuscular techniques optimized to provide the quickest recovery of pelvic floor muscle spasm, hypertonicity and/or muscle overactivity. It is a proven system to help with common painful sex, bladder and bowel diagnoses.

Unlike other offices, your first visit to Femina Physical Therapy is a thorough 85 minute evaluation.
Here's an outline of what to expect when it comes to pelvic floor therapy.
The goal of this initial evaluation is to understand all the different layers that could possibly be contributing to your condition. Once we understand the root causes of your issue, we will formulate a treatment plan to help you start feeling better, experiencing less pain, and getting back to the activities that you care about.

Pregnancy, labor, and delivery greatly affect the pelvic floor muscles, and our birth prep services using pelvic floor therapy can bring you confidence, strength, and flexibility.
What are the pelvic floor muscles?
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles inside the pelvis that form a hammock connecting the pubic bone to the tailbone. Both men and women have pelvic floor muscles. These muscles play an important part in stabilizing the pelvis and spine, supporting your organs (bowel, bladder and uterus) and toileting.
The Pelvic Floor and Pregnancy
During pregnancy the pelvic floor muscles are working overtime trying to stabilize and support the growing body of the mother and child. Read our previous blog post about preparing the pelvic floor for childbirth. During a vaginal childbirth, these muscles will utilize their strength and flexibility to help the baby be birthed. Whether or not the baby is born via C-Section or vaginally, the pelvic floor is involved, and this is where our birth prep services come into play.

Gender Affirming Care at Femina Physical Therapy
What is Gender Health and Gender Affirming Care?
Gender health is a spectrum of multidisciplinary treatments specifically related to a person’s gender. More commonly these treatments are called gender affirming care. Anyone can benefit from gender affirming care, but the term is most commonly associated with transgender and nonbinary people. We’ll outline how our PT services can help those individuals below.
When people think of gender affirming care, they will most commonly think of hormones or surgery. Both of those treatments bring changes to the body that sometimes need to be managed with rehabilitation services. Consultation with a physical therapist can help someone prepare for surgery by improving strength and conditioning. Physical therapists can also support someone recovering from gender affirming surgery. There are several surgical programs, such as OSHU and NYU Langone that have incorporated pelvic floor physical therapy as pre/post surgical care.
Physical therapists can support transgender people that don’t plan to have surgery, or are only on hormone replacement therapy. Changes in urinary and sexual function are common in trans women using estrogen replacement therapy. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help strengthen muscles, improve blood flow, decrease pelvic pain, and address changes in urinary function. Physical therapists can also create custom exercise plans to help reshape the body while improving overall health. Patients that are prepping for, or have undergone gender confirmation surgery (also termed gender affirmation surgery), will require the services of compassionate and skilled pelvic health and orthopedic physical therapists. Physical therapists can be involved to help support someone's transition in a variety of ways to help support specific needs:

Utilizing Shockwave Therapy in Rehabilitation
We are excited to offer SoftWave's shockwave therapy at our Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills offices
SoftWave therapy (also called Shockwave Therapy) has been increasingly utilized in rehabilitation environments. Shockwave therapy has well-researched applications not only for conditions like wound healing, but is also general orthopedic conditions including joint inflammation, sprains and strains and urologic issues such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction and pain. It can also help create angiogenesis and activate healing in the body.

Myofascial Release Therapy to Alleviate Chronic Pain
Myofascial restrictions can be caused by postural dysfunction, trauma, inflammatory conditions and/or surgeries. When these restrictions occur, they can produce tensile pressures up to 2,000 pounds per square inch on sensitive structure and lead to chronic pain. It essentially creates a ‘straight-jacket’ of pain around the tissue and can keep you in a cycle of pain.

Femina PT offers Fascial Stretch Therapy™, an assisted-stretching system that unlocks the flexibility potential in your body! FST™ is a unique system of therapy & training that dramatically improves your flexibility by lengthening your fascia.
Fascia is the connective tissue that envelops all structures of the body, effectively connecting them together. The problem is that fascia will thicken & shorten when any of your tissues are under stress from poor posture, improper body mechanics, lack of exercise, injury, surgery, disease or over-training. This process is accelerated when the body (and, therefore the tissues) are dehydrated.
