Why see a pelvic floor physical therapist during pregnancy?
Plus: Did you know we treat 'lightning crotch'?
This week we are highlighting pregnancy, labor & delivery. Although it's been awhile for me (my youngest is now 14!), I've reflected on my own personal experience, 22 years of experience gained with patients, time spent getting my doula certification and being a Birth Coach to build our Birth Prep Program.
Why see a pelvic floor physical therapist during pregnancy? This article touches on some highlights, but it's more than just your pelvic floor! Low back pain is a common complaint during pregnancy, as well as pain or discomfort in other areas such as your pubic bone (yep-we treat 'lightning crotch', too!)
But what if you aren't experiencing pain? Can we help? Preparing your body for childbirth is all about giving you the tools and the confidence to have your ideal pregnancy and birthing experience - whether you deliver vaginally or via c-section. Our therapists are here to support you throughout all trimesters and beyond.
As always thank you so much for being a subscriber to our newsletter, and remember that you can also stay in touch by following us on InstaGram at @feminapt and @dr.heatherjeffcoat.
That's it for now, see you next week!

Birth Prep Services
Pregnancy, labor, and delivery greatly affect the pelvic floor muscles, and our birth prep services using pelvic floor therapy can bring you confidence, strength, and flexibility.
What are the pelvic floor muscles?
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles inside the pelvis that form a hammock connecting the pubic bone to the tailbone. Both men and women have pelvic floor muscles. These muscles play an important part in stabilizing the pelvis and spine, supporting your organs (bowel, bladder and uterus) and toileting.
The Pelvic Floor and Pregnancy
During pregnancy the pelvic floor muscles are working overtime trying to stabilize and support the growing body of the mother and child. Read our previous blog post about preparing the pelvic floor for childbirth. During a vaginal childbirth, these muscles will utilize their strength and flexibility to help the baby be birthed. Whether or not the baby is born via C-Section or vaginally, the pelvic floor is involved, and this is where our birth prep services come into play.

Preparing your Pelvic Floor for Childbirth
What can a mother do to prepare her pelvic floor for pregnancy and childbirth?
First, you might be asking yourself “what is the pelvic floor”?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles inside the pelvis that form a hammock from your pubic bone to your tailbone and from sit bone to sit bone on the sides. The function of these muscles are to stabilize your pelvis and spine, support your organs (bowel, bladder and uterus) and maintain continence. In pregnancy and childbirth, these muscles go through a lot of changes. The goal of this article is to try and achieve optimal pelvic floor function throughout pregnancy and after.

Jill K. / Pelvic pain
I have been working with Erin since 2009; through 2 cervical fusions and chronic hip and pelvic pain. I trust her implicitly. She truly is a miracle worker. Because of her, I am able continue daily pilates three times per week without pain or injury.
Thank you Erin

Whilst recovering in hospital after the birth of her first child, our founder Sinead O’Donovan decided that new mums deserved more help getting back to their busy lives. Drawing on her extensive medical and bio-mechanical background, Sinead envisaged a garment that would be comfortable for new mums to wear all day whilst giving her all the support she and her body need.
In Heather's own words:
I thought it’s finally time to share one of my post-op recovery secrets — I’ve been loving that supported life in my @srchealth compression leggings since my hip labral repair surgery last October. When I wear them, my chronic left SI joint hurts less and my legs feel like they’re being micro-massaged all day long!
