Heather Jeffcoat, DPT | Painful Intercourse with Interstitial Cystitis

Heather Jeffcoat, DPT | Painful Intercourse with Interstitial Cystitis

Dr. Nicole Cozean interviews Heather Jeffcoat, DPT about Painful Intercourse with Interstitial Cystitis.

Dr. Nicole Cozean is a PelvicSanity and ICA Board Member and author of the book, "The Interstitial Cystitis Solution".

Heather Jeffcoat was a featured guest on the "Interstitial Cystitis Association" Youtube Channel for the ICA Walk for Awareness Event. Heather believes that rather than normalizing issues that negatively affect sex and pelvic floor health, it is the conversation about the causes and treatments for pelvic floor issues that needs to be normalized, just like when discussing any other body part.

Heather discusses a holistic approach to treating symptoms from painful intercourse with Interstitial Cystitis and other chronic pain issues. She covers a variety of approaches including communication between partners, an anatomical understanding, and physical tools.

Heather & Dr. Nicole Cozean also discuss:

  • a team approach to treatment for painful intercourse with Interstitial Cystitis, over a linear medical model and an approach of understanding to the interconnectedness of the bladder, pelvic floor, and nervous systems in working towards a holistic solution
  • understanding anatomy and exploring physical positioning to combat pain during intercourse; kegels
  • the free virtual event - Interstitial Cystitis Association Walk for a Cure

Testimonial by Fritzette H.

I went to Heather after the birth of my third child. It was lucky, really, that I was referred to her, because my doctor had referred me to a surgeon for a possible hysterectomy or pelvic wall rebuild. Thankfully, I went to Heather before undergoing either surgery, she was able to fix the problem. She has studied extensively in women's health--even written a book about it--and was able to diagnose my problem, suggest a course of treatment (6 weeks), and then follow through with said treatment. By the end, as she said, I was as good as gold. Boy, was it worth it! Though uncomfortable to talk about, much less write about, it is worth getting the word out there. If you have painful intercourse, especially after birth or other trauma, the treatment may be as simple as Physical Therapy (with Heather, of course). I highly recommend her.

I wanted to let you know that my pelvic floor held strong and gave me no trouble whatsoever in my trail race this morning (12 miles)! In a way, I felt like I ran better than ever because my core feels so rock solid from all the exercises you have me doing. That was especially valuable on the technical downhill - I just flew down the trail because I had confidence in my balance and form. Thank you for helping me get back to doing what I love.

A personal journey and testimonial from one of my patients:

My husband and I were married for 5 years before we were able to have intercourse due to my vaginismus. There was nothing traumatic in my past but for some reason, even though I wanted sex, I mentally avoided "that area" of my body and didn't even admit to myself that there was a problem for a long time, even though I was never able to put tampons in. Once I finally opened my eyes up to the fact that I had a problem, I had a surgery that was supposed to fix the issue.

Heather is the best! I saw her today for terrible hip/groin pain. I was so impressed with the safety measures in place and felt completely safe . Thanks for the healing hands.

Femina PT (née Fusion Wellness & Physical Therapy) has been such an answer to prayer, i'm so glad I found them! I've been struggling with vaginismus my whole life, but didn't have a name for it until about 6 or 7 months ago. Even once I did have a name for it though, I didn't know where to begin in getting help. My OB/GYN had me get a set of dilators, but I couldn't even insert the smallest one by myself. Most times I tried I just ended up frustrated and in tears. I felt really alone, like I was broken and didn't have the energy to keep trying. When I got engaged a few months ago though, I realized I needed to get answers so i wasn't dreading my honeymoon.

Testimonial by Carolina J.

I had tried Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy before (with another PT) and I had a really bad (painful) experience. A friend of mine and fellow patient, told me about Heather, Laureen and Femina PT (née Fusion Wellness & Physical Therapy) and I decided to try again. I am so happy I did! Femina PT have, literally, changed my life. I was able to do again things I couldn't do for over 10 years!! Their bedside manners are impeccable, their knowledge and understanding make me feel comfortable to recommend this place to anyone in pain. Specially if you have Endometriosis. 100% recommended!!
